PEST and Feflow
« on: October 23, 2006, 07:33:59 pm »
Why has Feflow not kept up-to-date with the latest version of PEST?  This is forcing users to run PEST independently of Feflow and limiting the use of Feflow with this very powerful calibration tool.  WASY seems to have abandoned PEST since the version interfaced by Feflow is at least 8 version behind the current PEST release.

I would think this is seriously limiting your ability to compete with MODFLOW which has a full interface to the current version of PEST including the use of pilot points.

We absolutely have no intention to abandon PEST. Indeed the PEST interface in FEFLOW is still based on an old version, but the basic functionality did not change in PEST. We're also still extending the capabilities of the PEST interface in FEFLOW. For example, with FEFLOW 5.2 we had introduced PEST for transient calibration. Currently we're developing a pilot point interface, too.
Due to the fact that we're dealing with a finite element geometry in FEFLOW, and that we use our own PEST 'translation' to speed up the parameter estimation process (not having to restart FEFLOW for each model run, for example) some of the developments might take a little longer than in MODFLOW.

Is there a user's manual for the IFMs and/or PEST? I know that there is some information in the white papers, but it really is not a description on "how to" use those options. There is a PEST manual, but it doesn't describe the use of PEST within FEFLOW.

I think that would help those of us who would like to use PEST, but don't know how.

In the User's Manual, you find some basic information about how to use IFM modules (like the PEST module). After loading the PEST module, you'll find all the information in the online help of that PEST interface.

In the demo data (<feflow root>\demo\examples\pest) there are some simple example models showing the functionality of the PEST interface in FEFLOW.
